2Far Too Brief to be Truly Useful  Mar 05, 2012 By TammyJo Eckhart "TammyJo Eckhart"
I had high hopes for this book.

I hoped it would give a clearer understanding of various positions in a household but in truth it only focused on five lead staff positions and a paragraph on four other positions and simply a list of 10 other support staff roles.

I hoped that it would give resources that you could consult as either a potential staff member or an employer but these sections were very general. While general might be good to some degree since each household and person is different, general guidelines and information would be very helpful.

Give us examples of interview questions, even a fake interview transcript would be helpful.

Give us a list of agencies, book, websites, and other resources please. Just assuming we can find things online or all ready know about them won't be helpful to someone just starting out. If you aren't just starting out, why would you need this book? Yes, resources may change but at least we have a starting point.

There is a form you can use to help you think about what you are looking for, primarily from an employer point of view on pages 81 to 88, this is probably the most useful part of the book.

The the interviews with a few household service providers was interesting but interweaving their experiences into the text would have made for more interesting reading. The text could also benefit from having the employer viewpoint represented as well, again with quotes and stories woven into the text to drive home points and highlight ideas.

Over all a very disappointing book that could and should have been so much more informative.

5Good advice for newcomers in the private service world  Jun 05, 2010 By Donna Lynn Shannon "DL Shannon"
David does a good job of explaining what the jobs in private service are really like. The personal accounts from professionals in the industry make it interesting and entertaining, while really giving a solid feel of this unique and demanding industry. The advice for employers is practical and direct, taking some of the mystery out of hiring staff for the home.
