Leadership and Self-Deception is the first book to identify a single, underlying cause of every form of leadership failure. Through the story of Tom—a “shluck” in his manager’s words—readers discover that identifying and treating individual leadership problems as if they were separate and distinct is not enough to transform people into successful leaders. The authors suggest that the key to leadership lies not in what we do, but in how we "are." They explore this compelling secret: Self-deception is the central player and trap underlying all leadership failures, relationship issues, and performance problems in organizations. Leaders who live in the box of self-deception are trapped: they cannot lead, no matter how hard they try and no matter how many skills and techniques they employ. With convincing examples, the authors show clearly how self-deception operates and how to overcome it. While other books cover people skills, this one goes deeper, fully illuminating the secret to leadership success.

5An AWESOME book  Aug 19, 2010
Leadership and Self-Deception is in a story format ( = easy read) and is about how to be a successful leader as an individual and/or organization but it can also be applied to family life. I don't know how else to describe it but it is a great book and definitely worth reading.

4Very Inspiring  Aug 08, 2010
Even though I agree with some commenters in that the book is lacking a little more info, this was a very inspiring book.

It really changed the way I relate to people, even to my wife. I'm trying to get my coworkers to read it too.

I recommend this book to absolutely anyone who wants to improve in relating to people.

4Very quick read  Aug 04, 2010
This book flies by -- I consumed it in a 4-hour train ride. A little too simplistic at times but very easy reading. The key takeaway, that you lead best by treating others as people rather than objects, seems trivial but is subtle enough that I will probably read this again as I lead teams in business.

5WONDERFUL book for relating to people  Aug 02, 2010
This book talks about a method for getting along with, caring about, and being cared for by, other people. Although the title makes it sound like a book for business people, it's also for getting along with anybody you have contact with. Some of the terminology is confusing, such as "getting out of the box", if you don't worry about that, but just think of the main ideas, it's wonderful!!

4Paradigm Shift  Jul 21, 2010

After reading Leadership and Self-Deception, it gave me a better understanding why I perceive others the way I do. The book is a narrative story explaining how a man discovered ways he has been self-deceived, and the results that follow his self-deception.

The process of this self-deception begins first with ignoring a prompting to serve another by treating them with respect and dignity. This first step is called self-betrayal.

After self-betrayal, one seeks to justify his or her action of mistreating another by enlarging ones good character and magnifying the faults of others. At this point they unknowingly encourage the negative actions of the other person in order to justify their self betrayal. The individual who betrays him or herself does not see them as the source of the problem, but rather the victim. Hence, referring to the title, becoming self deceived.

This book has helped me to see others as they really are: humans with needs just like myself. The book also gives good suggestions on ways to maintain a clear perception of others. It has caused me to look inward, and evaluate the motives for why I do what I do. I found this book applicable to my life, in helping me improve the relationships with my friends, family, coworkers and other acquaintances.

The book at times does seem a little repetitive, but I found it helpful to reflect and apply what I was learning to my personal life.

The book is easy to read and well worth your time. It is sure to give you a paradigm shift in the way you perceive others.
