Through the story of Tom—a “shluck” in his manager’s words—readers discover that identifying and treating individual leadership problems as if they were separate and distinct is not enough to transform people into successful leaders. The authors suggest that the key to leadership lies not in what we do, but in how we "are." They explore this compelling secret: Self-deception is the central player and trap underlying all leadership failures, relationship issues, and performance problems in organizations. Leaders who live in the box of self-deception are trapped: they cannot lead, no matter how hard they try and no matter how many skills and techniques they employ. With convincing examples, the authors show clearly how self-deception operates and how to overcome it. While other books cover people skills, this one goes deeper, fully illuminating the secret to leadership success. | | | |

It really is up to me. Mar 08, 2010 Great read for all of us to dig deeper into our inner-selves if we are looking for a happier existence. Same theme of "If I really want to change the world, then I must change myself first" but writen in a narrative form very easy to understand and apply.
Great insight~ Mar 01, 2010 Love this book...require all of employees in company to read this....we use the principles over and over. Highly recommend.
Deception that should be known. Feb 14, 2010 The book is great. It exposes many of the hidden problems/issues that many of us encounter every day. When one reads this book,he/she will say that the information was known but others are so blind folded.
Simplistic, But Worth a Read Feb 14, 2010 The title of Leadership and Self-Deception is misleading. It is barely about leadership at all; that word should be deleted from the title altogether. The book is really about how people justify their own mistakes. The authors deliver their message through a simple story about a fictitious corporation that has adopted the authors' views about how to get along with others.
In reading this book, I felt caught between two feelings. On the one hand, I felt like there is a lot of truth in what the authors are trying to convey, and that I could gain quite a bit by adopting some of their attitudes towards others. On the other hand, the way they delivered their message had a paternalistic, absolutist feeling to it that made me feel like Big Brother was writing to me.
This is a short book, and easy enough to read. But, if you are interested in this topic, you could do better. I recommend instead: Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me): Why We Justify Foolish Beliefs, Bad Decisions, and Hurtful Acts by Carol Tavris and Elliot Aronson. Mistakes Were Made is a much more direct and balanced look at the same topic, and I highly recommend it.

One of my top 10 favorite Jan 26, 2010 I love this book. I've read it 3 times. A summary of this book is: You cant change someone else but you can change yourself, and that will in turn change others. Everyone but those who think they have never made a mistake in their life will benefit from this book. One of my top ten books I've read ever. I can not recommend it higher.
