And once you have a person in place, there are several key things you can do to help develop a healthy student ministry that includes encouraging your youth pastor, engaging teens, and involving parents. In this practical book for church leaders, you'll: * Set goals for your student ministry that inform your search for a youth pastor. * Facilitate communication with your entire church ministry staff by using the included discussion guide. * Discover how to implement a ministry that supports families and their involvement in the youth ministry. Whether you already have a youth pastor or are just beginning your search, this book will help you set up your student ministry and youth pastor for health and longevity. 4Inside the Mind of Youth Pastors: Mindful  Feb 15, 2010 By Patrick J. Jones
Title: Inside the Mind of Youth Pastors: A Church Leaders Guide to Staffing and Leading Youth Pastors by Mark Riddle

Pages: 182.

Time spent on the "to read" shelf: 3 months.

Days spent reading it: 2 days.

Why I read it: I am always looking for good books about ministry and youth pastoring. I thought this might be a good one to read.

Brief review: This is a book about hiring youth pastors. It also deals with developing relationships between staff members.

One thing this book does well, it breaks down good and bad reasons to hire a youth pastor. Riddle argues that a youth pastor should not be hired to take away ministry from church volunteers who are too busy to work with youth. A youth pastor should be hired for strategizing and coordinating. A youth pastor should be a support for the church ministry as a whole. I like how Mark Riddle talks about not hiring a youth pastor just because it has always been that way, or the church needs someone to take care of the kids. Youth ministry should be a church-wide ministry, not just a place for the youth pastor to minister alone.

The second half of the book deals with developing the relationship between a senior pastor and a youth pastor. I thought there were some good ideas in this section. Riddle talks about cooperation, having a mentoring mentality, and teamwork as keys. The very last section of the book deals with some odds and ends including sections on unwritten expectations of the congregation (fix my kid!), number comparisons, and a short chapter on part-time youth pastors (those poor souls).

This book was a quick read. I think it would be great for a search committee to go through (if they are willing to think through the process differently than it has been done before). I think it would also be a great resource for a senior pastor and youth pastor to go through together, especially if rifts have started to develop in their relationship.

Favorite quote:
The stereotypes of the youth pastor who can't be bothered with theology and the senior pastor who can't be bothered with the reality of modern culture are fading. Over the last several years, I've seen an increase in the number of youth pastors who are deeply engaged with theology through reading and dialogue. I'm not suggesting that they're parsing systematic theology, but they are reflecting on the nature of their beliefs as they relate to youth ministry and your church. More and more youth pastors are seeing the importance of letting theology inform how the local church does ministry. This is an exciting time to be working with youth pastors.

Stars: 4 out of 5.

Final Word: Mindful.

4very helpful book  Dec 18, 2008 By Mark Oestreicher
i'd known this book was in development for a couple years (since i know the author), and i've been looking forward to it. i'm not sure how well it will sell, since it's a book -- primarily -- for church leaders (senior pastors and such) who oversee youth pastors, or are looking to hire one; but, i think it's one of those books that just had to be written. and, this is clear: this is a book that will be immensely helpful to those who read it. i expect we'll be hearing thanks from senior pastors and churches who find this book helps them break the cycle of bad assumptions, bad hiring processes, and bad hires. i think this book will help senior pastors and youth pastors get along better. and i think it will help youth pastors make better choices in "accepting a call" to a church.

mark writes clearly, in short chapters. the book can be read straight through, or in a non-linear fashion. depending on who's doing the reading, you might want to choose our own adventure through these ideas. there's good humor, and lots of stories, and a wad of helpful tools, ideas, suggested practices and processes.

so, here's my suggestion: pastors who oversee youth workers really need to read this book. and youth pastor should pick up a couple copies of this book (honestly, i'm not just trying to sell it -- i really do believe this) and ask your supervisor if they'd be willing to read it concurrently with you, and meet to talk through the ideas. it could do wonders for opening lines of communication on crucial issues about effective youth ministry, as it pertains to the role of a youth pastor.

thanks, mark, for working so hard to give us such a helpful resource.

5A great resource for all church staff!  Mar 04, 2009 By Ryan Boyls
I just recently finished this book and knew that I had to put it in the hands of everyone I know who works for the church in some capacity. Whether you're a senior pastor, a youth pastor, or a children's pastor, you need this book. It will challenge you and hopefully create a healthy dialogue amongst your church staff.

My favorite chapter compares two different philosophies of church ministry called, "Church A" and "Church B." This chapter alone is worth the price of the book. My belief is that Mark is on to something very important and gives great insight as to why youth ministry has such a high turnover rate.

If you're considering hiring a youth minister to work as a staff member in you church, buy this book and read it with your search team. If you are a youth minister looking for a church, buy this book and take it's advice to heart.

There is a wealth of practical knowledge in, "Inside the Mind of Youth Pastors," but don't take my word for it. Read it yourself and go through it with your church staff. It will force you to answer some tough questions and maybe even give you a glimpse into what a thriving ministry in a thriving church might look like.
